A new look at old friends – I. Imaging classical radio galaxies with uGMRT and MeerKAT

ABSTRACT We have undertaken a systematic study of FR I and II radio galaxies with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) MeerKAT. The main goal is to explore whether unprecedented few μJy sensitivity reached in range 550–1712 MHz at resolution ∼4–7 arcsec reveals new features emission which might need us revise our current classification scheme for classical galaxies. In this paper, we present results first set four galaxies, i.e. 4C 12.02, 12.03, CGCG 044–046, 021–063. sources been selected from sample well-defined criteria imaged uGMRT 550–850 (band 4) MeerKAT 856–1712 (L-band). Full images are presented all sample, together in-band spectral images. Additionally, uGMRT–MeerKAT image L-band polarization structure provided 044–046. Our contain wealth morphological details, such as filamentary lobes, beyond hotspots three sources, misalignments. briefly discuss overall properties 044–046 light local environment well, show possible restarted activity 12.03 needs be confirmed. conclude that least here, I/FR still holds improved imaging capabilities, but richness details also suggests caution carried out automatic procedures surveys poorer angular resolution.
